Pygmy seahorse
Pygmy seahorse

Diving in Komodo National Park is best done by liveaboard, which allows you to explore the area to its fullest. The park and surrounding area boasts one of the world's richest marine environments, with over 260 species of reef building coral, 70 species of sponge, marine worms, mollusks, echinoderms, crustaceans, over 1000 species of cartilaginous and bony fish, marine reptiles, and marine mammals. Some notable marine species include pygmy seahorses, anglerfish, nudibranchs, manta rays, dolphins, whales, napolean wrasse and groupers.

Komodo Dragon
Komodo Dragon

Located 200 nautical miles east of Bali, the Komodo National Park is nestled between the large island of Sumbawa and Flores in Indonesia, all of which are part of the Lesser Sunda Islands. Officially declared a World Heritage Site in 1991, the Komodo National Park encompasses 132,000 hectares of marine waters making it one of the largest protected zones in the world.

The Komodo National Park and surrounding areas boast a unique biosphere born in the ancient volcanic eruptions that formed Sumatra, Java, Bali and the islands lying eastward to Papua New Guinea. As a consequence, the topography of the islands are striking and unique.

Komodo Island is 35km in length and 15km wide. It is mountainous with an average altitude of 500-600m, the highest peak being Satalibo (735m) in the north. The majority of the island is covered in lontar palm savannah with remnants of rainforest and bamboo forests. The irregular coastline is marked by rocky headlands and sandy bays against a backdrop of soaring volcanic cliffs.

The Komodo National Park hosts a rare diversity of animals, including a population of the world's largest lizard, the famous Komodo Dragon. The Park is also home to Sunda deer, wild buffalo, wild boar, the macaque monkey and wild horse. For bird watchers, there have been over 150 bird species identified including the sulphur-crested cockatoos, imperial pigeons, white-breasted sea eagles and maleos.

Komodo, Indonesia Liveaboard Diving

Departing from Bima Bay, on Sumbabwa Island, just a short flight from Bali, the SY Indo Siren's first stop on this 10 night diving adventure, is the muck dive spot of the "Unusual Suspects", before sailing on to Sangeang Island with its dark volcanic sand and bubbles. By the fourth day we are diving within the National Park in the areas of Gilli Lawa Laut and Batu Bolong where strong currents can be experienced, bringing with them grey reef and white tip sharks and schools of snappers and fusileers. The Indo Siren stops at Rinca to make a walk with the dragons before cruising southwards to Nusa Kode. Across the strait on the south of Komodo Island we dive with numerous manta rays before heading northwards to Gilli Banta.

Our final day is spent in Bima Bay, where the calm waters offer the perfect spot for some kayaking or water skiing.

Komodo Diving Highlights

Manta ray
Manta ray

Castle and Crystal Rocks ̶ Two submerged pinnacles, laying just off Gilli Lawa Laut. The pinnacles teem with life and attract large pelagics including eagle rays, grey reef sharks, Napoleon wrasse and scools of snappers and fusileers. All are seen here whilst we hang in the current and watch the show.

Cannibal Rock and Yellow wall — Just two dive sites of the area of Nusa Kode. Colder water, as low as 20C / 68F, can be experienced here and the water often carries a greenish tinge. But the diving reward far outweighs the need to extra thermal protection! It is here we find the microscopic 'lady bugs', along with rhinopias, frogfish, pygmy seahorses, mantis shrimps and an array of nudibranchs.

Manta Alley — As the name suggests this site attracts the manta rays which come regularly to the cleaning stations. It is common to see several mantas lined up at one time. We watch as 'the black bird' gracefully swoops down or hangs effortlessly in the current.

The Unusual Suspects — A favourite for macro photography, with so many weird and wonderful creatures we will often dive this site more than once! Tiny coleman's shrimp and zebra crabs cling to fire urchins, frogfish can be found grouped together, ghost pipefish, harlequin shrimp, sea horses and mimic octopus make this site a real delight.

Expected average water temperature

Between 23-25 C in the south and up to 28 C in the north.

Getting there

The livea aboard trip leaves from Bima on the island of Sumawa. Bima is very easily reached via a one hour flight from the famous tourist destination of Bali.

We have selected Bima as our ideal departure point as it has the most efficient access to the prime dive sites.

What to Bring

We recommend that you bring as little as possible. Personal clothing items including bathing suit, t-shirts, shorts, a sweater and light cotton trousers for cooler evenings. A light rain jacket is advisable for some of our destinations. For sun protection, please bring sunscreen and a hat.

You may wish to bring your personal diving gear however, if you prefer, we provide a full complement of Aqua Lung equipment free of charge (except dive computer and torch).

Most guests prefer to go without shoes onboard but you might require sturdy sandals for land excursions.

Shower gels are provided in your cabin however please bring any other personal amenities or required medication with you as these may not be available at your local destination.

For your own leisure you may wish to bring reading material, however we do have a library selection and games on board each of our yachts as well.

Diving Equipment Available

We provide all guests with the option to use our dive equipment. We offer for free the use of 3 mm wetsuits, Aqualung Wave BCD's, Calypso regulators and full or open heel fins with booties. If you wish to use our fins it may be worth bringing along some neoprene socks to prevent blisters / rubbing. We have a large variety of sizes to suit any guests needs. Please note your equipment requirements on the application form ahead of arrival.

Our tanks are 12 litre / 80 cubic feet aluminium and filled to 200 bar / 3000 psi. We have a small quantity of 15 litre tanks available on each liveabaord and pre booking is required for these. The tank valves are both International and DIN, and DIN regualtors may be used without the need to bring an additionl adapter.

Dive Insurance

Whilst diving incidents can be avoided, due to the nature of this trip and the sometimes remote nature of the diving destinations, it is MANDATORY that all divers have adequate dive accident insurance for medical evacuation and recompression treatment.

While most travel insurance policies will cover scuba diving, they often fall short when it comes to air evacuation and paying for recompression treatment.

We strongly recommend purchasing a diving-specific insurance policy, e.g. DAN membership and insurance, which offers specific coverage for diving accident treatment and for medical transportation.

The live aboard operators can organise a short term insurance coverage. Premiums are as little as €2.50 /day for a 2 week policy. Please let us know well ahead of your trip if anyone would like to take advantage of this.

Note:

Flights — Thie departure point for the live aboard is remote from an International airport and requires an Indonesian domestic connecting flight to reach it. The reliability of these domestic airline schedules vary. We strongly advise all you to spend one night before and after your cruise to allow for changes to domestic flight schedules and avoid disruption to your onward International connections.
