Mask Defoggers Explained

Regardless of the brand or type of defog there are basically only two ways to defog your mask, either coat the lens with an inhibitor (gels like SeaGold, and of course 'spit') or make the lens very clean so fog doesn't form (surfactants like SeaQuick and SeaDrops). Both approaches work equally well but require different application methods so it's mostly a matter of personal preference.

• A cleaning spray is the most popular approach because it's quick and easy. Generously spray the inside of the mask lens, rub and rinse completely to remove. If the lens is not 'squeeky clean' then repeat and perhaps rub a bit harder.
• The liquid drops are a concentrated version of the spray type cleaners. If you like the concentrated drop cleaners, a convenient alternative is a travel size of Johnsons 'No More Tears' Baby Shampoo®.
• With the gel, apply a thin even coating to the inside of the mask lens (more is not better) and lightly rinse to smooth out the coating. Do NOT completely rinse or rub away the gel, remember you want a light coating of the gel on the lens.

Every once in a while it doesn't hurt to also clean the outside of the mask lens. It won't help to prevent fogging but you'll see better if the lens is clean on both sides! By the way, we are not big fans of the 'mask bucket' found on many dive boats. When everyone is rinsing their masks in the same bucket, they are sharing their bacteria and viruses with everyone else. We avoid that by rinsing our masks in seawater (works fine), fresh water from the shower hose if there is one, or even bottled water as a last resort.

The trouble with most Silicone necklaces on the market is that they just don't fit properly over the 2nd stage regulator mouthpiece. Hit the second stage and it drops out of the necklace defeating the whole purpose of the necklace to begin with.

The original AP Valves Buddy Self-Sealing Surface Marker Buoy Closed (SMBC - SMB Closed). Much copied but never bettered.

A high visibility signaling device and more. There's no doubt that safety should be a top priority for anyone hitting the water. This Buddy Self-Sealing Surface Marker Buoy Closed (SMBC) with unique internal valve helps to get you noticed.

A real gem of a product, the 1.4 metre x 20 cm wide orange sausage shaped SMBC was developed in the early 1990s and quickly became a standard part of most divers' kit.

The Buddy SMBC is simply inflated by purging a regulator or air gun in the open end. The really clever bit is in the mouth, where a unique self-sealing baffle – or duckbill valve – is forced shut forming an airtight seal on inflation and preventing the buoy from accidentally deflating on the surface.

The Buddy SMBC also features a stream-lining flap which closes over the mouth when used in a current to prevent any sea-anchor effect. It also has an over-pressure/dump valve which prevents the buoy from bursting and allows deflation after use. Because the SMBC stays inflated it is easy for the surface crew to track or for the diver to hold aloft and wave if separated from the boat.

The Buddy SMBC can also be used for making a hanging safety or deco stop. Simply attach a line or reel and you have a superb delayed action decompression marker buoy. It can provide you with extra buoyancy in case of a BC failure. Alternatively it can be inflated at the start of a dive and towed as a standard surface marker for drift dives. The SMBC is pulled upright by tension on the line and clearly marks the diver’s position.

This high vizibility SMB is one of the best SMBs we've ever seen as it has high visibility contrasting Red and Yellow sides. Perfect to get noticed no matter what the weather and water conditions are.

There are certain bits of kit that you take for granted. You only realise how good they are when you are forced to use an alternative - spring fin straps definitely fall into this category. The Hammerhead Mini has been engineered with efficiency and the highest priority. To achieve the necessary power levels, the Hammerhead Mini utilises Power Valve Technology (PVT). The PVT is the heart of the system that synchronises the delivery of pressurised air to a reciprocating piston, cycling at 18,000 rpm. The PVT delivers snap-action control of compressed gas energy for an instant high powered acoustic signal with at absolute minimum air usage.

The Hammerhead Mini has a Unique Signal, a powerful low pitched buzz, the most attention grabbing sound a diver is ever likely to hear underwater. It reaches out to extreme ranges and enables accurate homing by divers, should they become separated.

The Hammerhead Mini is designed to last, with all high speed components, including the PVT system, machined from self lubricating, space age polymers, for light weight, low wear rate and long CORROSION FREE life - qualities that metal components simply cannot match. The Hammerhead Mini is also fitted with and acoustically optimised exhaust valve to protect against sediment intrusion.

The Buddy Pocket Reel

Only 7.5cm in diameter by 5cm deep - the Buddy Pocket Reel is the perfect solution to the problem of bulky and cumbersome SMB/Navigation reels.

Weighing in at only 205 gm the Buddy Pocket Reel can be easily stowed in your BCD pocket or clipped unobtrusively to a D Ring.

The dome-sided design sits comfortably in the palm of the hand and a simple press-release /auto-lock-action spring mechanism is ideally placed for thumb operation. Alternatively, the spring can be removed so that the thumb catch has a lock-on/click-off release action, if preferred.

The Buddy Pocket Reel also features a comfort-padded strap with toggle adjustment for tightening onto the wrist when used as a navigation reel.

The reel is wound with 40 metres (130 feet) of floating line - manufactured to our own specifications for the optimum combination of strength and flotation.

The cord has a breaking strain of 50 kg and the advantage of being positively buoyant which means that it will rise above the sea-bed or wreckage when played out and so help avoid entanglement. If the line is accidentally wound all the way into the reel body, the end is easily identified and recovered by means of a large attached O ring.

A large loop in the end of the cord makes tying off at the shot-line or connection to a surface marker buoy (SMB) a simple operation. The winding handle also features a groove which is useful for temporary lock-off of the line.

The Buddy Pocket Reel is constructed from durable polypropylene with a chromed brass centre spindle which has the double function of providing structural strength and ultra-smooth reel operation.

Warning Note: As instructed, you SHOULD NOT have a reel attached to any part of your kit or use the wrist-strap when sending an SMB to the surface.
