Choose your Melalux Undersuit carefully. Generally, the Metalux 100 or Metalux 200 is suitable for Australian conditions. The Metalux 300 should only be used in extreme conditions.

What the press say...

For most of my UK diving I use a compressed neoprene drysuit with a Pertex nylon undersuit. This keeps me relatively warm in water temperatures above 10oC. Below this temperature more thermal undergarments such as a fleece sweatshirt are required. When Northern Diver told me it had produced the warmest undersuit ever manufactured, I thought that it required testing. I chose the Metalux 300 (the thickest) option and dived in chilly Northumberland waters of 11oC. Donning the suit, I immediately notice a crunching sound, it is made from some kind of metallic material. The second thing I noticed was that it was warm, very warm. By the time I arrived on site I was dripping with sweat. However, as soon as I entered the water the thermal properties came into their element. After 80 minutes I was still warm, although my fingers were starting to numb. I completed two more dives that day of similar length and remained very warm throughout. Finally, taking off my drysuit, I found I was quite damp underneath (due to a slightly leaking dump valve). I hadn’t noticed this at the time, so the undersuit appeared to work while quite wet.

In a fashionable yellow or blue with black and silver, the Cortex is manufactured from Cordura. The seams – the parts of a suit that are the most vulnerable – are triple-glued, rubber-taped and then vulcanised. The latex wrist and neck seals are adjustable by cutting to size. Moreover, the neck seal is fitted with an outer flap, which reduces flushing in the separately supplied, vented neoprene hood. It’s a bit fiddly to use at first but certainly keeps you a lot warmer. For divers who use or are thinking of integrating a dry-glove system the suit is ideally fitted with warm cuff protectors, making the glove’s locking ring easy to fit. Other standard items include internal braces, a bellows pocket with knife attachment loops, drysuit bag which opens out to form a changing mat, maintenance kit and a drysuit manual. This suit would appeal to someone diving in varying conditions, as underclothes provide most of the insulation. It is nice and flexible, appears well made and certainly looks up to the rigours of UK diving. Personally, I would choose the neoprene neck seal option, only because I spend all day in a suit and I find them a lot more comfortable.

The Cortex is made from Cordura, with all seams 'sealed for life' with rubber tape. A neo-warm neck (made from neoprene) is fitted as standard and there are two hood styles - a standard separate neoprene hood or the optional attached hood system for cold-water diving. The arms also feature neo-warm cuffs which integrate with Northern Diver's dry glove system, again a useful feature for cold-water divers. The suit also features internal braces, a generous equipment pocket and rear-entry zip with protective cover. There are 15 gents and 10 women's sizes, plus a custom-tailored option. With all the extras this suit edged in front of the rivals to be our choice.
