A drysuit alone won't keep you warm. To ensure a really comfortable dive, a good undersuit is what you need. Northern Diver has filled the cold-water and warmer-water dry suit requirements with its range of Metalux Undersuits, available in 100, 200 and 300 thermal options.

Metalux is a lightweight, high performance insulating material designed to reduce air movement and reflect thermal radiation. Metalux retains its insulative qualities when wet or compressed and the quilt construction retains thermal integrity throughout the life of the garment. Regular insulators breakdown after frequent washing. Metalux outlasts all hollow-fibre undersuit insulators.

Available exclusively from Northern Diver, Metalux undersuits are changing the way divers insulate themselves from the cold. The new metalised core of Metalux is now up to 30 percent more efficient than its predecessor (Flectalon) but retains all of the best qualities divers have come to expect.

Warmth to suit your needs

The Northern Diver Metalux Undersuits are available in three weights, 100, 200, and 300, with 300 being the warmest by its method of maximum heat reflection and super-efficient insulation.

What the press say...

For most of my UK diving I use a compressed neoprene drysuit with a Pertex nylon undersuit. This keeps me relatively warm in water temperatures above 10oC. Below this temperature more thermal undergarments such as a fleece sweatshirt are required. When Northern Diver told me it had produced the warmest undersuit ever manufactured, I thought that it required testing. I chose the Metalux 300 (the thickest) option and dived in chilly Northumberland waters of 11oC. Donning the suit, I immediately notice a crunching sound, it is made from some kind of metallic material. The second thing I noticed was that it was warm, very warm. By the time I arrived on site I was dripping with sweat. However, as soon as I entered the water the thermal properties came into their element. After 80 minutes I was still warm, although my fingers were starting to numb. I completed two more dives that day of similar length and remained very warm throughout. Finally, taking off my drysuit, I found I was quite damp underneath (due to a slightly leaking dump valve). I hadn’t noticed this at the time, so the undersuit appeared to work while quite wet.

Metalux is a unique undersuit, insulating and reflecting a diver's heat back to the body.

Features:

Reflects body heat back to the diver

100% breatheable

Insulates totally

Ultra lightweight

Quick-drying

Bacteria and fungus resistant

Fleece lined

Fleece collar

Ultimately durable

Elastic thumb and foot stirrups

Pockets on the hips

Two-way zipper

Wrist mesh

Mould free

Works when wet

Now Standard Issue to ALL United Kingdom Military Divers
Northern Diver's genuine Nature's Wing Split Fins with that Northern Diver extra ingredient makes these the best split fins on the market.

Northern Diver CODA fins were awarded 'Best Fins' in the latest 2009 trials and are now standard issue for all UK military divers.

Based on the same principle as nature uses to propel the mighty creatures of the ocean forward, the efficiency of the design ensures that increased power is delivered through the fins with less effort required from the diver.

The unique patented Nature's Wing design allows water flow to interact with each fin blade producing independent thrust from each fin. The fins also produce thrust on each up and down stroke which improves the diver’s finning efficiency whilst diving.

Features

Patented dual-fin design

Indestructible feel to the build-quality

Very efficient finning on both the up and down stroke

Unbeatable price for a fin in this class

The polymer was developed to ensure a stronger fin action in strong currents. The elastomar has a soft feel with very good spring and retains its shape even in Arctic waters.

A conservative black design gives the fins and understated look, it doesn't need to shout to show it works!

The generous fin pocket fits even our largest size 12 safety diving boots.

Medium = boot sizes 5 - 7
Large = boot sizes 8 - 10
X-Large = boot sizes 11 - 13

Note: For industrial safety boots increase required fitting size by 1 size

What the press say

Dive Magazine Test Zone
Northern Diver Coda Split Fins

Value: 10
Performance: 9.5

Similar to other split fins, the Coda from Northern Diver is based on the patented design by Nature's Wing. Now, split fins are nothing new; indeed, a few years ago, we were inundated with various manufacturers' offerings. But I'm a huge fan of them. They give plenty of thrust when required, contrary to what you might read elsewhere; and if you use them correctly, they are extremely efficient. They do require a bit of getting used to, and if you try to fin from the hips as you would with conventional single-blade fins, they won't work that well. But the overriding factor is that they very rarely give you calf cramp, even after many hours in the water. Also, fo any kind of diving where your hands are restricted - for example, when holding a camera - split fins allow you to quickly manoeuvre sideways and even backwards by leg movement alone.

Following our almost monthly split-fin tests a few years ago, we found the Tusa Xpert Zoom fins to be best for value and performance. So, the only way to see how the new Coda fin performs was to do a sideby-side test - and I mean this literally: one foot fitted with the Xpert Zoom and the other wearing the Coda.

After several dives in a range of differing conditions, they were indistinguishable from each other - the Coda fins are just as good as the previous best split fins on the market. Also, they are £23 cheaper - that's about 25 per cent less expensive.

But does the Coda compete on quality? Well, after three months' use, they stil I look and feel fairly new. On closer examination, the polymer that they're made from appears to be up to the job. The fins still have a soft feel with a good, springy action, and still retain their shape even after some fairly aggressive use.

They could be improved, though. The heel straps at the back are, as with the majority of buckles on the market, just bog standard: while there's r nothing wrong with them, it's not easy to squeeze those on the Coda fins to release them particularly at the end of the dive with numb fingers under 5mm gloves. However, Northern Diver has a much better solution in the shape of its spring straps. These are brilliant, and it's a shame they're not supplied as standard. You can order these separately if you wish. There's one other feature the Xpert Zooms have over the Coda fins - the option of different colours, with the Coda it's black only.

In conclusion, these are excellent fins at great price. In terms of performance they are up there with the very best, but go for the spring straps.

Dive says

Almost perfect split fins, save for tricky release buckles and no alternative colours

Value: 10
Performance: 9.5

Dive Magazine, December 2009

Split Fins have a way of splitting opinion. Half of Dive staffers prefer the traditional fin design, arguing that they don't want to have to change their finning techniques. The other faction holds that once you've got the knack of using split fins, you'll never look back.

These fins are based on the patented design by Nature's Wing: we found that they performed as well as any other fin on the market, including the highly-rated TUSA Xpert zoom. After being continually used for several months, the polymer they are made from showed no serious signs of wear, and they retained the springy action required for speedy, responsive finning.

A great fin at a reasonable price.

Developed to Save Lives.
What would you do in a diving emergency if you needed to get the attention of the pick-up boat or someone else on the water's surface?

Traditionally, SCUBA divers have relied on whistles as their only available signaling device in such an emergency. But a whistle relies on the diver being able to take their regulator out of their mouth, place the whistle in their mouth and have the ability to blow loud enough on it to be heard. Even when employed, they weren't heard very far.
In contrast, Dive•Alert enables divers at the mere touch of a button to generate a blast of sound that can be heard up to a mile away!

Dive•Alert is a specially designed, small, lightweight air horn that uses quick - connect/disconnect hose fittings to become an integrated part of your power inflator. Installation is easy and takes only a moment.

Dive•Alert does not require any modification of your other equipment, and it does not interfere in any way with the normal operation of your other equipment.

When you need to get someone's attention on the water's surface, you simply press a button and Dive•Alert uses a small amount of air from your SCUBA tank to make a piercingly loud sound. Dive•Alert was engineered to be operated as easily with a gloved hand as a bare hand, and as easily with the left hand as the right.

Just make sure that before every dive you check that Dive•Alert is installed correctly and functioning properly. Also be careful not to point Dive•Alert toward yourself or toward anyone who is in close proximity to you when you unleash Dive•Alert's piercing sound, or loss of hearing could result.

After each use, Dive•Alert should be pressurized and rinsed with fresh water with the rest of your gear.

Specifications

The Dive•Alert uses chrome-plated brass couplings to attach to your power inflator. The activator button engages a chrome-plated brass actuator valve stem causing a small amount of air to rush by a stainless steel diaphragm, emitting a piercingly loud sound from the injection-molded thermoplastic body.

The Newest Dimension in Scuba Diving Safety.

Responding to customer demand Ideations, Inc. has created the first true surface and sub-surface diver signaling device.

Traditionally, SCUBA divers have relied on whistles as their only audible surface signaling device. But, if a diver is disabled and can’t blow into the whistle, the whistle makes no sound at all. Equally frustrating and dangerous, if a diver needs to attract the attention of someone who is too far away to hear the whistle, the whistle is of no help.
Or, what would you do if you wanted the attention of your dive buddy, for whatever reason, and he was simply distracted and not paying attention to you at that very moment? Traditionally, you would be forced to swim up to him or her until you got their attention.

In contrast, DiveAlert Plus enables divers at the mere touch of a button to generate a loud blast of sound on the surface that can be heard up to a mile away! Or, by switching the DiveAlert Plus diverter valve for Subsurface signaling the diver can now signal for his dive buddy’s attention underwater!

DiveAlertPlus is a specially designed, small, light weight pneumatic signaling device that uses quick-connect/disconnect hose fittings to become an integrated part of your power inflator. Installation is easy and takes only a moment.

DiveAlertPlus does not require any modification of your other equipment, and it does not interfere in any way with the normal operation of your other equipment.

When you need to get someone's attention on the water’s surface, you simply select “AIR” operation with your diverter valve, press the button and DiveAlertPlus uses a small amount of air from your SCUBA tank to make a piercingly loud sound.

Or, when you want to get someone’s attention under the water’s surface, you simply select “H2O” operation with your diverter valve, press the button and DiveAlertPlus uses a small amount of air from your SCUBA tank to make a percussion noise to alert your dive buddy.

Installation - DiveAlert Plus connects between the power inflator and the low-pressure hose by means of its quick-connect/disconnect hose fittings.

Operation – Operation is as simple as selecting the desired function with the diverter valve and pressing the activator button. To select surface signaling, move the diverter valve so the pointer lines up with the “AIR” graphic. To select subsurface / underwater signaling, move the diverter valve so the pointer lines up with the “H2O” graphic.

Just make sure that before every dive you check that DiveAlert Plus is installed correctly and functioning properly. Also be careful not to point DiveAlert Plus toward yourself or toward anyone who is in close proximity to you when you activate the surface signal or loss of hearing could result.

Maintenance – After each use, DiveAlert Plus should be rinsed with fresh water. This is especially important after use in chlorinated swimming pools and in other water having corrosive substances. Additionally, it is highly recommended that you blow the water out of DiveAlert Plus before storing. This can be done by pressurizing and activating both the surface and subsurface signaling elements. We recommend that you cup your hand over the surface signaling element to muffle the loud noise.

Technical Tip

Threading a Quick-Release Belt Buckle

Starting from the front of the metal buckle, thread the left waist strap through the larger end slot of the buckle. Position the buckle approximately 45 cm (18 inches) of webbing length from the plate left waist slot. Then thread the webbing from the back through the center slot and through the front of the inner most slot. Then thread the webbing through the back of the larger end slot so there are two thicknesses of webbing through one slot and pull the weave tight.
