I am looking at buying a retractable compass from an internet supplier but was wondering (probably a dumb question) if compasses are calibrated for northern hemisphere/southern hemisphere and if so, what level of inaccuracy one could expect?

Good compasses are calibrated for different regions of th eglobe. So this is something you should buy from an Australian dive shop.
