Coronavirus COVID-19 Update

Coronavirus COVID-19 Update

With growing global concerns around Coronavirus (COVID-19), I wanted to take a moment to reach out to you directly and provide you with an update on our commitment to you during this time of uncertainty.

The health, safety and well-being of our customers, associates and staff is our top priority and is at the centre of every decision. The Scuba Doctor team have been working diligently to stay on top of guidance from the Australian and Victoria governments, plus various industry agencies. We are actively keeping our staff updated on preventative practices and preparedness plans. We are dedicated to providing a safe diving/snorkelling experience for everyone.

As the days go by, we will all be making adjustments to the way we live and work — rest assured that we are here for you. All the training and hire dive equipment is serviced routinely, and it is sanitised and disinfected after every use.

I would like to reassure everyone that we continue to take all appropriate measures to ensure our facility is safe and that we have existing plans and cleaning protocols in place to ensure it stays that way. Our facility continues to be cleaned and disinfected on a regular basis, our dive professionals are using recommended hand washing health, and we are actively cleaning common areas.

Diver Safety

Practise Good Hygiene

With the threat of Coronavirus on everyone's minds, divers want to know what precautions they should take against the spread of disease. Properly sanitising all of your diving equipment is extremely important.

Divers Alert Network (DAN) released a write-up that we hope you'll take the time to read. DAN encourages divers and dive operators to properly disinfect all equipment. According to DAN, "questions have arisen in the dive community about disease transmission when using rental equipment, especially regulators. Properly sanitizing equipment is paramount to preventing the spread of the disease." To learn more about what precautions to take, check out the full DAN article.

With COVID-19, the focus should be on sanitising regulators, masks, snorkels, and BCDs. If you're a diver using rental gear, as it is the case for many divers, and would like to take extra steps to protect yourself from transmissible diseases, DAN recommends to thoroughly wipe the equipment with disinfecting wipes and then rinse with fresh water before use.

Dive equipment can be sanitised by using a cleaning product like Steramine tablets. For those unfamiliar with Steramine tablets, a 150 tablet bottle makes up a total of 284 to 568 litres of sanitiser depending on the desired concentration of 400 ppm for spraying or 200 ppm for soaking. This is a safe way to sanitise your rebreather loop, regulator, dive mask, BCD and all other dive equipment. We're out of stock currently, but hopefully, have another shipment coming before the end of March.

For some time we've stocked Sterisol Scuba Mouthpiece Germicide in a compact 59 ml (2 fl oz) size spray bottle perfect for travel! We thought it to be a very worthwhile precaution for the travelling diver. Not many of you have been on the same page and purchased it, but we live in changing times. We still have two bottles left, but we're not sure as to when we'll be able to get more.

If you prefer not to rent equipment, we have plenty of articles online to help you shop for diving and snorkelling gear. See Scuba Buying Guides, Trusted Snorkelling Advice, and Beginners Spearfishing Gear.

True Aussie Spirit

This is a rapidly evolving situation. The federal and state governments are focused on us all doing the right thing to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus in Australia, and we continue to monitor for new developments very closely. While preppers have been fixated on buying toilet paper, it might now be worthwhile considering what you need to buy so as to be able treat symptoms and make yourself more comfortable should you actually get COVID-19.

Currently, The Scuba Doctor dive shop is open with staff here to serve you in-store and fulfil your online orders. We are still Renting Gear, doing Guided Dives, and Bespoke Courses. We are experiencing delays in restocking some products, and there is every chance this will get worse before it gets better. Our team, and all of our suppliers, are doing the very best they can. Please be understanding.

In times like these, as we support, we listen, and we learn — we must remember that this is new territory for all of us. I am extremely proud of our team's tireless efforts to always be there for each other, their families and our customers.

Our communities are resilient, and together we will get through this. We've been having fun with some of the bizarre things going on via our Facebook page, but we're also providing serious updates as things change.

If you have any questions or concerns, or would like professional advice, please reach out to us via email or telephone. The good news is that you can't catch Coronavirus underwater. Stay safe people, GO DIVING!

Best regards, Lloyd Borrett,
Owner, The Scuba Doctor Australia.
