VARS News Release - 27-Apr-2007 - HMAS Canberra

Postby lloyd_borrett » Sat, 28 Apr 2007 5:06 pm

G'day,

Just to keep you all in the loop, there have been some interesting developments with the ex HMAS Canberra project in recent weeks.

Firstly, on Wednesday, 18th April 2007, the VARS team mounted a successful expedition to survey our new preferred site for the sinking of the ex HMAS Canberra. You can read all about it on the ex HMAS Canberra web site at http://www.hmascanberra.com.au/site-selection.htm. As soon as the deed is signed, we will begin our campaign to get the government to agree on this dive site location.

Secondly, on Friday 20th April 2007, the Bellarine Peninsula Independent published a page one story with the headline "Delay strikes dives, Ship to languish in Western Australia for months". You can read the story online and/or download a PDF version via the ex HMAS Canberra web site at http://www.hmascanberra.com.au/itn-20070420.htm

And finally, VARS sent a letter to the Minister for Defence expressing our concerns about the ex HMAS Canberra project delays. Again, you can download/read the letter in PDF form, see http://www.hmascanberra.com.au/assets/downloads/VARS_canberra_channel_deepening_timing_concern.pdf, or follow the link on the home page of the ex HMAS Canberra web site.

We have also added details of the local charter operators and dive shops to the "Bookings" section of the ex HMAS Canberra web site. Google Maps is being used to provide maps of where the various businesses are located. If we've missed any you know about, please contact us.

Work has also begun on creating a standardised listing of all Victorian dive sites, together with positioning information to at least show where they are relative to each other via Goggle Maps. If you could help with this effort we'd certainly appreciate your assistance.

Best Regards, Lloyd Borrett
VARS Webmaster
