G'day guys,
While I still do use Dive Victoria and other charter operators from time to time, plus do shore dives, more often than not these days, I'm doing boat dives from private boats.
I've joined the Victorian Sub-Aqua Group (VSAG), see
http://www.vsag.org.au. I'm enjoying the company of a great group of people with heaps of diving experience. (Some of these guys have been diving longer than Peter!)
Most boat dives happen on Sundays. There is usually more than one private boat of a club member going out and you "book" with the dive master if you're interested in going out the next Sunday. Then you call up on Saturday evening to find out if the dive is still on and if you've got a spot on a boat.
The boats based on the Eastern side of the bay usually depart from Sorrento, while those on the western side head out from Queenscliff. Then we meet up somewhere and head to the dive site chosen for the first dive.
Usual practice is to do two dives, stopping somewhere out on the water for lunch in between dives. The club has plenty of gear you can borrow, including tanks so that you can get in that second dive.
Typically there are 4 to 5 divers per boat, so half of the boat go in while the others wait for their turn.
Cost? Well Benita and I joined as a family membership, which I think was $85. I think it's about $50 per year for a single membership.
The cost of a day out diving? You contribute $40 for the day to the boat owner to cover his fuel costs and ramp fees. $40 for two dives is excellent value for money.
Last weekend we did the first dive out from the Back Beach at Jubilee Point. The second dive as a drift dive off Point Lonsdale. The time out before this we did the J2 submarine followed by the Eliza Ramsden. I've also dived places like the South Channel Fort and Rosebud Reef with VSAG.
Great diving, in great company.
All certified divers and boat owners are welcome to join.
Best Regards, Lloyd Borrett.
