I am looking at buying a retractable compass from an internet supplier but was wondering (probably a dumb question) if compasses are calibrated for northern hemisphere/southern hemisphere and if so, what level of inaccuracy one could expect?

Good compasses are calibrated for different regions of the globe. So this is something you should buy from an Australian dive shop.

My recommendation would be the Suunto SK-8 diving compass calibrated for the Southern Hemisphere. It's available as a wrist or bungee mount. The wrist mount version can be adapted to be used with a quality retractor from Gear Keeper. (This is the same retractor once rebranded and sold by Suunto.)
