Dark Knight: Blue Ringed Octopus with Eggs

DARK KNIGHT: is the name given to this photographic print of a female Southern Blue Ringed Octopus (Hapalochlaena maculosa) carrying a large clutch of eggs. The 16 x 24 inch portrait orientation print comes with a certificate of authenticity and is signed and numbered.

Of the four known species of Blue Ringed Octopus, the Southern Blue Ringed Octopus are the largest members, growing up to 20 cm in size. Despite their relatively large size and deadly venom (known as tetrodotoxin), the Blue Ringed Octopus is a very shy and timid creature, rarely seen out in the open waters. This female was carrying and aerating a large clutch of eggs, a very rare and fascinating sight. The females will reproduce through internal fertilisation, guarding the eggs for months until they hatch, and she unfortunately dies. Her legacy lives on through her young.

This photo was taken in April 2019 by Sam Glenn-Smith at Blairgowrie Marina, which has large numbers of healthy Blue Ringed Octopus.

We do not supply frames with these orders — only the prints. We recommend taking the print to a local company that is able to frame up the photo for you. Alternatively you can frame the photo yourself in appropriately sized frame.

These photographic prints are done to order. We do not hold stock of these photos in store. Please allow 3 to 5 business days for printing and packaging before the print is sent out. To achieve high quality, we don't hurry the process. The prints are shipped in tubes via Australia Post and you will be sent an email with the tracking details when it ships.
